photograph once the blue bowl was back with the family. Tessa gave her an email address and thought that would be the end of the story.

A week later, a photograph arrived showing the bowl surrounded by grown grandchildren and a new generation of small hands. Joan had included the pancake recipe, with the measurements clearly copied onto a fresh card. Underneath was a note: “The first pancake is still for the helper.”

Tessa printed the recipe and made a batch in her cream-colored bowl. The first pancake was lopsided. She ate it standing at the counter, then called her sister and asked whether she wanted breakfast the following weekend. Her kitchen had begun, after all.
